Our School Grounds
Natural, outdoor spaces boost young people's physical & mental wellbeing
Outdoor learning nurtures and fosters a love of nature. We are lucky to have the following within our school grounds:
School Garden Outdoor classroom Bird feeders Bird Nesting Box
Murals Reading benches Outdoor workstations Wildflower Meadow Native trees Native hedgerows Greenhouse/ Polytunnel Gardening club Herbs Outdoor blackboards Raised beds Wellbeing area Wildlife Camera
Biodiversity
Biodiversity is the variety of animal and plant life in any environment. The more diversity of living things we have the better. We promote biodiversity on our school grounds
We help birds at our school
Birds are a very welcome visitor to the school grounds all year round. They are a particularly cheerful addition during the colder months and need our help during the winter when food is scarce. We have bird feeders located around our school grounds along with a bird nesting box equipped with a solar powered camera
We help bees, butterflies and insects at school
Bees come in all shapes and sizes. In Ireland we have 3 types of bee: honeybees, bumblebees and solitary bees. Honeybees don't need our help, bumblebees and solitary bees do. We have planted many bulbs around our school grounds, let wildflowers grow in designated areas and created log piles to help our bees, butterflies and insect populations.
Growing in our Raised Beds and Polytunnel
We grow a variety of vegetables, herbs, flowers each year and tend to them carefully. We run a gardening club at lunchtimes and this year we have added raised beds and more seating to our wellbeing area. We visited our neighbour Vincent Rooney and got lots of advice on planting and sowing in our polytunnel. The gardening club have responsibility for preparing our raised beds and polytunnel for planting. We have sown carrot, tomato, pea, bean, potato, pepper, zucchini, scallion, parsley, chive, garlic and flower seeds.
